Now that class is back firmly on the political agenda (did it ever really disappear?), there is an interesting parallel universe with regard to football in the great city of Manchester.
This train of argument started as a thought, quickly evolved to hypothesis and is now a fully fledged theory.
All middle class Manchester United fans and all working class Manchester City fans are knobs...
... all working class Manchester United fans and all middle class Manchester City fans are alright.
Think about it yourself and you will only ever find the exception that proves the rule.
And, interestingly, if you are a City fan and start working class and become middle class then, I'm afraid, you are still a knob, and vice versa.
Working Class City Fan Being A Knob
The reasons?
All working class Man City fans have a plate of chips on each shoulder, the annoyance at winning trophies in recent years and so undermining the fundamental matrix of their personalities ie inverted snobbery is severely challenging for these knobs - better glorious failure than the allure of success.
All middle class Man Utd fans come from deepest Cheshire, the Home Counties or the Far East and have no affinity with the club, the city or its history but are glory seekers ie snobs. This makes them knobs as they seek the success of an unrelated club to offset underperformances in their own personal and/or professional life.
Snob Knob or Inverted Snob Knob?
Or are y'alright?
